Rita Cook, Principal

Rita Cook was born and raised in Peru, IN and has spent most of her life in Miami County. Saint Charles Borromeo Church and School has always been an important part of her life. She has received all of her sacraments here, attended school here, and has been a parent, teacher, and now principal at this school. She received a bachelor’s degree from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College and a master’s degree from IUPUI, both in Elementary Education. She recently completed coursework at Purdue University to obtain certification as an administrator. She has 15 years teaching experience and this is her third year as an administrator. "I love children, and I have been blessed by being involved for many years in a career that I really enjoy."

Leyna Washburn, Pre-K

Leyna Washburn is enjoying her first year at Saint Charles Borromeo School and is having a fantastic time getting to know the young children and families in her classes.

She is a graduate of Ball State University where she received her teaching degree in Early Childhood Education. Since that time, she has been the lead teacher in an after-school care program and then an instructional assistant in another local elementary. She has also had a lot of experience working in a childcare setting with children from ages 6 weeks to grade 6.


Pat Carver, Kindergarten

Pat Carver has been married for 31 years and has 3 adult children. She decided to get her teaching degree when her last child was in high school. She graduated from college in 2004 and has been teaching kindergarten at Saint Charles Borromeo since January, 2006. “It is a wonderful feeling to wake up every morning and to be eager to come to work!”

Wendy Baldwin, 1st Grade

Wendy Baldwin was born and raised Catholic in Columbus, IN, and she attended a Catholic school from first through eighth grades. She received a Bachelor of Science degree from Indiana State University in 1979 and a Master of Science degree from Ball State University in 1985. Her majors were Elementary and Special Education.

She and her husband Randy celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary this year. They have three children, ages 20, 18, and 16. She has taught for 18 years, 13 of which have been in Catholic Schools.

Emmy Lloyd, 2nd Grade

Emmy Lloyd was raised in Miami County and has attended St. Charles Borromeo Church since she was five. She lives with her husband Fred, who is a police officer for the city of Peru. Her other family members include her 20 month old son Benjamin and her 13 year old niece Jamise. On December 28th, the family will have a baby girl to add to the mix.

She earned her bachelor degree in Elementary Education and Athletic Training from Indiana Wesleyan University. She has been teaching at Saint Charles since 2000. She has one year experience in third grade, and all her other years have been spent in second grade.


Jessica Scheckelhoff, 3rd Grade

Jessica Scheckelhoff graduated with an Elementary Education degree from Ball State University. Some hobbies that she enjoys are peaceful walks, spending time in prayer, spending time with family and friends, reading, waterskiing, knitting, playing tennis and golf, and dancing. One of her favorite pastimes is swing dancing at Fountain Square Theater in Indianapolis, Indiana. She is originally from Pendleton, Indiana, and she grew up with one brother and twin sisters.

Susan Hammond, 4th Grade

Susan Hammond was born and raised in Peru, Indiana and has lived there for most of her life. She graduated from Peru High School. She is also an Indiana University graduate where she received her Master’s Degree in Elementary Education. She has been married for 24 years. Her husband Dick is an accountant. They have three children: Will 20, Claire 17, and Rachel 14. All of her children attended St. Charles Borromeo School from Preschool through 6th grade! She taught in the region for 3 years and then became a stay at home mom for the next 13 years. When her last child started school, she started school again too! She has been the 4th grade teacher at Saint Charles Borromeo for 7 years.

Michael Kay, 5th Grade Homeroom/Religion/PE

Michael Kay and his wife Mary have two sons and three granddaughters. He enjoys golfing, fishing, hunting, and spending time at the lake with his wife and family. He has been a teacher at Saint Charles School for 38 years. He taught second grade for 28 years and for the last ten years he has been teaching a non-violence program and physical education.

Tammy Nystrom, 4th - 6th Grade Team Teacher

Tammy Nystrom was born in Chicago, Illinois and raised in Hammond, Indiana. She attended William Tyndale College and graduated in 1980 with a degree in Bible and Hellenistic Greek. She has a Masters degree in linguistics from the University of Texas at Arlington. She and John, her husband of 25 years were missionaries with Wycliffe Bible Translators. John is a crime scene investigator. They have two sons, Kevin an almost college student, and Andrew who is working on his electrician’s degree at IVY Tech. She also has two Labradors, Jazz and Mimi, and a one-eyed cat named Helen.

Ruth Berkebile, Music

At the age of nine, Ruth Berkebile joined the Saint Charles Borromeo School children’s choir. She sang and played Requiem masses daily until she graduated from eighth grade. She also sang and played daily Mass and Benediction for four years at the Indianapolis boarding school, Ladywood, which is now known as Cathedral. Daily playing and singing Masses was part of her life until graduation from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College near Terre Haute, IN.

After graduating from SMWC, her desire to perform took her to Aspen Summer Music School in Colorado, the University of Southern California for a Master’s degree in piano performance, Butler University for a Master’s in violin performance and specialized duo-piano study. With the latter repertoire, she and her twin sister won a competition to play duo-piano with the Butler Symphony and one year with the Indiana Arts Commission. In 1987 she was asked to take a position at Saint Charles Borromeo Church and School. Because the school became certified, she earned a teaching certificate in 2004. Her motto for teaching is “Learn by Doing".
